Those wins are more than symbolic. While the Fix NICS bill to expand background checks on gun sales is far from a solution, the fact that it wasn't paired with the bill that Republicans were insisting it on—a national concealed carry permit reciprocity—is pretty huge. Republican leadership totally blinked on that one, in the face of Freedom Caucus outrage.

Likewise, the bill finally, after two decades, will essentially lift the ban on CDC gun violence research, something that Democrats have been talking about for those two decades.

Vermont Legislature Passes Sweeping Gun Restrictions

Lawmakers in Vermont, a place long steeped in hunting culture, on Friday approved a sweeping package of new gun restrictions, making the state all but certain to join Florida in passing a raft of new gun control measures after a teenage gunman killed 17 people last month at a high school in Parkland, Fla.
Gov. Phil Scott, a Republican, has vowed to sign the measure. It represents a remarkable departure from the state’s existing gun laws, which are some of the weakest in the country — and an about-face for Mr. Scott, who decided to consider new gun control measures only after a teenager was accused of plotting a school shooting in Vermont in the days after the violence in Parkland.
“No state is immune to the risk of extreme violence,” Mr. Scott said in a statement on Friday, adding, “If we are at a point when our kids are afraid to go to school and parents are afraid to put their kids on a bus, who are we?”

'The gun was in a holster in a dresser drawer.' Seriously? Three little kids in the house and you don't even think to lock the drawer? 

At a minimum, the dad should lose the 'right' to own a gun. Forever.

Responsible gun owners store firearms safely.

We never had to find where the firearms where stored, we knew where they where. We also knew if we went anywhere near them, we. Would get our asses beat.

That's not safe storage.  

I grew up much the same.  As long as there were really little kids around the guns would be up in the attic..but at a point where we could follow rules they'd be inm the cabinet...but they were never anywhere near the ammo.  Even if we broke the rules (and that's something kids do...) the biggest risk any firearm posed was being used as a club.  The biggest risk ammo posed..choking hazard.  

No matter what the rules were in that hous or how strongly or loosely people followed them..storing a firearm with ammo in a way that leaves it accessible to a child is illegal, by state and federal laws.

We simply don't enforce them.
