Why would crime be a matter of self control in the first place (unless we're talking about people with pathological compulsions)? I don't have to leverage any self control to avoid committing a crime.....do you find yourself standing around on the edge of committing crimes, nothing between you and the commission thereof except self control?

I agree!
Although one must make a clear distinction between moral responsibility and explanation- I.e, if someone steals something from a shop, they are bad through and through. The explanation as to why, is for a number of reasons. I just wish intelligent people had more back bone.

Having intelligence and backbone does not mean humans will be kind to each other. Humans go to their deaths all the time "fighting" for all sorts of superstitions they believe to be fact.
There is nothing stopping smart people from dreaming up ways to harm other people. Sell a utopia on a political or religous level, ad credulity and "bravery" and you have instant lemmings. That is not an atheist or theist issue, that is the flaw that leads humans to division.
We do have an evolutionary morality that transcends political and religious labels. "The New Atheism" by Victor Stinger. Read it.
