If you want a gun and you aren't a felon you go to the store, give them money and walk out with a gun. If you want a permit to carry a loaded gun on your person it takes about 2 weeks for a criminal background check and costs $20 a year.

It can't get better than that.

"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

So how does that fit with the "more restrictions crowd?"
So we are evaluating policy using anecdotes now?
To you it is an anecdote, to me it is not, it is my personal experience and evidence.
Of course I would evaluate policy using my evidence and experience. What 1st person "evidence and experience" do you have?

606 is an acceptable body count to you? 1 1/2 a day just because some asshole with a gun decides to stop being a "responsible" gun owner? Seriously?
In Britain in 2010 there were 58 murders.
Britain is the size of Wyoming, with a population of 63 million.
The US has 313 million residents, almost 5 times as many, and a host of social problems Britain doesn't seem to have.
I'm not sure how the comparison says anything.

I apparently owe someone a reply but first - let's have this week's dose of mayhem thanks to our allegedly responsible gun owners.

Quote:DES MOINES, IA, 4/21/14: A 4-year-old girl was shot and killed Monday in what Des Moines police said was an accidental shooting in her family's home. Police say it appears the girl somehow got ahold of a loaded weapon and shot herself. The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. at an apartment at 2746 Fleur Dr. The girl's mother, father and two younger children were home at the time of the shooting, police said. The girl died at Blank Children's Hospital. Des Moines police Sergeant Jason Halifax said, "Initial appearances are that the safe weapons handling practices were not followed. Right now that's just kind of the outward appearance
Yeah, sarge... when a 4 year old picks up a loaded weapon the observation that ' safe weapons handling practices were not followed' is a pretty easy guess!
Oh, Brakeman's thing? Yeah, sorry. I replied to Chas and never got to it.
Again, its a nice anecdote which keeps the gun nuts wetting their pants and completely ignores the reality of what the plethora of guns in this country really means. For every armed citizen who gets to indulge his Rambo-fantasy there are thousands of family members/acquaintances/innocent bystanders who face the fusillade of shots fired by themselves or others.

Quote:the total number of people shot in the United States each year has risen significantly from the beginning of the new century to 2008, the latest year for which complete federal data is available. Between 2000 and 2008, a total of 272,590 people died of gunshot injuries in the United States--an average of 30,288 gun deaths per year, a number shocking by comparison to any other developed country. During that same time period, an estimated 617,488 people suffered nonfatal gunshot injuries in the United States. The total number of people shot in 2008 totaled 110,215--the highest total recorded during the nine-year period surveyed in the analysis.
Almost a million casualties from the deliberate or accidental use of guns in an 9 year period and you guys are apparently fine with it. A cost of doing business, I guess?
Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that we are not as "developed" a country as we like to think.

It would be nice to have sensible gun regulations, which the NRA has essentially vetoed largely by just scaringnthe shit out of morons who think they're going to need them to fight the government one day. We couldn't even pass a bill that was watered down and full of loopholes.
And we can't forget Pierre's ludicrous "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun". Of course, equivalency works both ways, so "the only thing that stops a good guy with a gun is a bad guy with a gun".
"The reason things will never get better is because people keep electing these rich cocksuckers who don't give a shit about you."

Wait...where do you live?
This really isn't a good rebuttal to MindForgedManacle's observation. Pointing out what one person decides to do for their protection (which is something Obama actually doesn't decide for himself) in no way negates the fact that gun fights get people on both sides killed. He was pointing out the flaw in a fallacious piece of rhetoric, and you have yet to properly address it without appealing to equally fallacious Strawmen. Why do you keep doing this on this thread, KUSA?
