Ah, but lets not forget that deaths by shootings have been declining every year since they peaked in the early 90's - the rise of crack- (down 49% since the peak as of last year) and that 2/3rds of all gun related deaths are currently suicide, while mass shootings account for less than 1%. During the same period, guns available for sale have more than doubled (fucking ar15 craze......nubs) - as has media coverage of crime. Just as a bit of counter-intuitive data on the one side, and explanatory data on the other.
We can do better, but given where we were 20 years ago....we've done well.

This chart seems to disagree about much of that.

(edit: found the disparity, pew factored in population and weighted gun related deaths against that as a ratio....so I guess we're doing well on both counts, safer cars, safer streets...though it looks like cars are winning out, eh?)
