Another fine, upstanding L-ARGO who made that one little mistake.

Apparently not, Chip.
If these idiot fuckers who leave their guns lying about were all charged with negligent homicide, it might help with this sort of problem. Even if it did not, it would not be punishing anyone more than they deserve. If someone is such a fucking moron that they leave a gun where a four-year-old can get it, they should never see freedom again, as they are a danger to society. I am just sorry that four-year-old did not kill that stupid fucking asshole instead of himself.

I don't know, Pyr. I suspect that yesterday that same guy would have read a similar story and said "who would be stupid enough to do that?" The problem with guns is that everyone thinks THEY are responsible....until they fuck up just once.

I did write "might," and also went on to discuss how it may not in the part of my post you omitted. I am far from confident that it would prevent things. Other than possibly preventing the same idiot from doing it again. Of course, there are plenty of idiots, and, unfortunately, bullets do not seek out idiots and just act in accordance to where the gun is aimed and the laws of physics.
But regardless of what it would prevent in the future, the idiot should be punished. I suspect, however, that gun nuts will tell us some crap about how bad he must feel. Him feeling bad is not a proper punishment for what he has done. He should not only never be allowed to own a gun again, he should not be allowed to even touch one. And some quality time in jail might also help him see the error of his ways, but he might be so fucking stupid that his idiocy is terminal
It is really just unfortunate that the four-year-old did not kill the idiot fucker instead of himself. Then it would have had a good outcome.

Oh, I agree that any idiot who fails to secure a gun that is fired by a child should be prosecuted. No question there. What I doubt is the "transferability" of the lesson. The "it can't happen to me" mentality is strong with gun nuts.
But somewhere back in this thread is a video about what happens when kids find a gun. Even after they just have had a class about "leave it and go find an adult" they invariably pick it up. One of the most distressing things they do is look down the barrel.

Manslaughter, but, bingo. There's this notion that a certain amount of misconduct is sheltered under the umbrella of a persons rights. Some feel that they have the right, for example, to leave a loaded, unsecured firearm in the presence of children. Somehow this is just part and parcel of their right to bare arms. The same people who wouldn't leave their car running with their kids in it......will leave a loaded pistol very near the floor. It's disturbing. The same people who would seek compensation for damages if the neighbors kid drove through their living room window.......will moan and wring their hands about the tragedy of accidents when a bullet from their pistol goes through a neighbors window, neighbors kids.
Manslaughter, criminal negligence, destruction of property. Plenty of jurisdictions have a 3 misdemeanor rule.....and federal statutes can bar anyone convicted and sentenced to a term over 12 months in most cases, or 24 months in all cases. There used to be an exception, but it expired. Hit em with a felony-or a cluster of misdemeanors.......then you can confiscate their firearms and prevent them from legally acquiring another. All of this (and more) can be done under -current- gun laws... and it is, day in and day out...like a machine.
We throw the book at a gang banger, and let the redneck walk.

Hmmm.... No wonder the NRA works strenuously against gun research.

Quote:Connecticut handgun licensing law associated with 40 percent drop in gun homicides
Quote:A 1995 Connecticut law requiring a permit or license - contingent on passing a background check - in order to purchase a handgun was associated with a 40 percent reduction in the state's firearm-related homicide rate, new research suggests.
Quote:Earlier research from Webster found that Missouri's 2007 repeal of its handgun license law was associated with a 25 percent increase in its firearm homicide rates.

Someone needs to work on their math skills. Two dying every day would be 730 per year (732 on leap year). That is not "about 100." If it is about 100 per year, then it would be about 1 every 3.65 days.
