Atheists; what do you base your morals on?
RE: Atheists; what do you base your morals on?
I care about people's feelings a lot. I often think about how it must be in their shoes and I act upon that.

Are you sure? So if you owned a company then you would never fire anyone? You don't refuse anyone's requests from you?

Non-sequitur. Your conclusion could not be more invalid.

No.
You do not have the intellectual capacity to understand, and I do not feel like wasting my time yet again. Get a dictionary.

Telling someone that they are wrong isn't a valid argument sunshine.

I suspect it wasn't meant to be.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

I'm just now getting into this thread, having posted on a similar subject elsewhere, so forgive me if I repeat what's been said before (will review the entire thread later)...

Morality is a measure of how we treat our fellow sentient beings.

The basis is a combination of our empathy (we feel the pain of others) and sense of reciprocity (how we would want to be treated in the other's place or the "do-unto-others..." rule).

The three commandments I try to live by are as follows:
1. Act with integrity
2. Respect the rights of others
3. Take responsibility for your actions

These commandments are not based on any dictates from a deity but rather how I would wish to be treated by others. This is called "the social contract". The existence of lack thereof of any god would thus have no impact on my behaviors toward others because my sense of empathy and reciprocity remain constant.

As a theist, you are free to believe that God gave me this conscience and sense of empathy and fair play if you wish. Others might suggest that evolution has taken its course, that humans being a community animal codependent on one another for survival would not have survived otherwise.

The imperative remains the same either way.

A lot. Often. I have been supervisor and I thought about my clients and what they want. I thought about the group as a whole. I was considerate of my employees and they loved me, but if they needed to get out, they went out. My line of work is actually helping people, so it goes with my personality. In fact, I got hired today in a great job because of my warm and kind personality, since that is exactly what they need. I can also be a bitch. I'm a bitch after I have considered people's feelings and they seem to take advantage, be rude to me or others, say stupid things on and on besides the fact that they have been explained otherwise, hard headed individuals who think they are intelligent but really are offensively air headed, and people who wouldn't mind stepping over people just because they think a fairy godfather made them do it. I'm a nice person to people who will take it. I'm a bitch to those who ask for it. Angel Cloud
