Is it true that Theists are never rational and Atheists are never irrational?

no

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

I ask this question because I met a person who held this position and I wanted to check the level of philosophical integrity of the members on this site.

Do you agree with such a statement yourself?

What is "philosophical integrity"? Is it some bullshit for tricking gullible minds similar to "religious orthrodoxy"?

You met a person who held that position. What does that have to do with this site, and whether or not we have philosophical integrity (which may or may not be related to the question at all)?

Welcome aboard.

Most atheists have come to the disbelief in the existence of gods based on skepticism. Most atheists are also skeptical about other supernatural claims besides the existence of gods.

Skepticism by definition, encompasses rational thinking.

There are some atheists that irrationally believe in some ridiculous things. I have a friend that is completely rational in his reasons for not believing in gods, yet he believes UFOs are alien in origin, and that alien abductions are real.

On the other hand, there are theists that are rational with regards to many other supernatural claims. But not when it comes to their religious beliefs. They compartmentalize those beliefs in a special part of their mind that is immune to rational, skeptical examination.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Not true, if a rational person is indoctrinated from a very young age and lives in a society dominated by religion then its very likely they will believe as well, as irrational as it might be.

It is true that atheists are more rational than theists when it comes to their belief in a deity. But that kind of goes without saying.

I have to say that the tone of your first thread is somewhat...uh....tense. It's almost as if you expect, or wish to be, attacked on these forums.

In my short stint here, most of the muslims that post on these forums tend to be somewhat fundamental, highly argumentative and condemning of us heathens. If you want to be treated with respect here, treat others with respect. That doesn't mean you can't disagree with people. Just do it in an intelligent, respectful manner and you will be treated in an intelligent and respectful manner.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Don't say stupid shit and you won't get attacked.

And one other thing: We generally don't cotton to well to blanket statements like "all atheists are rational and all theists are irrational." You know as well as we do that this is a patently ridiculous idea so to even put it forth is an open invitation for attack. Think before you speak and all will be well.

Any time someone declares "X is always X" when referring to a human being - it is a practical guarantee they are wrong to varying degrees.

Theists can be perfectly rational, as can be atheists.

By definition, religious belief is an irrational belief due to its requirement of faith, which denies evidence. If it had evidence - it would not require faith.

Believing in God doesn't mean you are incapable of crossing a road safely, most theists manage to function reasonably well most of the time.

If it helps, I am an atheist, and I have an irrational belief that all spiders are potentially lethal and should be avoided at all costs.

I just haven't worked out a way to politicise, monetise, ostracise and indoctrinate others in my irrational beliefs yet.

If you think about it, a belief in some sort of God character is something we can register as an irrational belief. It sounds ridiculous when you think about it.

But this doesn't mean that all Christians and Muslims make irrational decisions and are unintelligent people. There are Christian morons, Muslim morons, and atheist morons alike.

Isn't it self-evident that it isn't true? Or...did you expect/hope everyone here would say it was to confirm your preconcieved notion of what we think?

Okay, maybe it isn't fair for me to make that judgment. I apologize if what I said is untrue, it is just that this is a trend among theists who come here. See? I would have done it myself! (Bad preconcieved notions! Bad dog! Don't bite people! Tongue)
