Who here likes sushi?

Love sushi. There are several decent places in my little landlocked town.

You have more risk of getting sick of a door nob someone else touched before you than getting sick from sushi. At least in the west because most people don't eat it every single day. And if you did it would be more likely that you got sick from the cook or wait staff's poor handling of the food.

I don't doubt the truth of that, however, it remains true that there is a non-zero risk of parasites from fresh fish, and that FDA recommendations recognize that fact.

I still eat it despite the risk.

There is a fish dish served in some parts of china which involves cooking parts of the fish without killing the whole fish. The fish is served on a dish literally still gulping air.

How about the lobster cut in half, still alive looking at you from the plate, whilst you suck on its tail? Yummy!


First time I tried sushi I wondered what the hype was about. The second time tasted better than I remembered it would. The third time I was already in love with the stuff. I fucking love sushi!!

It makes some sense - there are some sushi treats that don't do it for me texturally.

People rave about Uni, the texture is unappealing to me. Same with Ikura (raw salmon eggs), I can't think of that stuff as anything but bait - it doesn't taste bad, but I don't like how it feels in my mouth.

Pretty much anything else I've tried goes down the hatch without any issues whatsoever.

I actualy make my own sushi.

It ends up being a bit bigger, but choosing your own fish and other ingreedience has it`s benefits.

plus: the stuff you cook yourself is always better.

Though I haven't done salmon eggs, I really enjoy the little tiny orange eggs (I forget what they are called). I especially like it when, like an hour later, you feel something in your mouth and you are like, "Bonus! A leftover fish egg from my sushi feast!"

The tiny orange eggs are tobiko (flying fish roe) or masago (smelt roe), though other fish roe is often substituted. I like tobiko, it's nothing like salmon roe, and the little surprise treats you saved for later are always fun.

Yep, masago is the one. Good stuff.

I have tried to get toro here (that's the fatty tuna, right?) but it is rarely available and expensive as hell when you can find it so, sadly, I have yet to try it.
