God of the Gaps

God of the Gaps
IMO, even the staunchest atheists have to be open to the idea that a God-like being could exist in cases where we have gaps in scientific knowledge. Think about the Big Bang - even if it did create the universe, what was there beforehand? What lies outside the boundaries of our universe?

Thoughts?

RE: God of the Gaps
There were many more gaps in our knowledge 10, 15, 25 and 100 years ago. And we filled them all with science.

The only reason Christians seem to cling to this idea (in my opinion) is that they're butthurt that they won't be alive to see some of those gaps get filled.

Poe, troll? I can't believe that someone would honestly ask what atheists think of a god-of-the-gaps........but maybe I'm just being too generous. You realize that the term is a pejorative, correct?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

-Round these parts most christians actually do believe that everything awesome will happen and all gaps will be filled (that will ever be filled) in their lifetimes - being that their lifetime is the end of times. They've been thinking that for centuries, so meh.

Also, no...the staunchest atheists don't have to accept the god of the gaps. Otherwise they wouldn't be fucking atheists at all.

If you're going to troll, at least phrase yourself appropriately. I'm tired of dealing with dumbshits on a daily basis.

I agree with Summer, simply because we don't have all the answers now doesn't mean we should fill in the missing pieces with something there is zero evidence for. I'm content with, "Perhaps someday we'll know."

We don't need to fill the gaps in our knowledge with an imaginary god in order to make ourselves feel special.

RE: God of the Gaps
I think Carl Sagan says it best:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EQDhtVl_50

But as my personal opinion of the gods of the gaps, no, I'd rather have the knowledge or say I don't know than fabricate a deity.
As for the kick-starter of the universe I have two questions: why does it care for us and why did it make the universe so inhospitable to humans, if we are indeed the peak of it's creation?
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
