At what point have I interpreted it literally? How can I even interpret fiction literally? What do you think that means, exactly?

The interpretation results from personal views. This is why a homophobe will quote the Bible to defend their gay-hate. Why racists quote the Bible to endorse slavery. Why when Henry VIII wanted to Divorce Catherine of Aragon, he and his supporters quoted the Bible stating that if a man marries his dead brother's wife their marriage will be cursed and fruitless, and Catherine of Aragon's supporters quoted the Bible stating that a man must marry his dead brother's wife. It's one of the reasons that so many sects of Christianity exist.

Thank you for assuming that I have never studied the Bible. I would correct you, but that would probably come across as an appeal to authority.

I have yet to see an interpretation that didn't have selfishness at its core.
