I think that sometimes, especially in the case of food, we are either so far removed from some issue in either distance or time that it fails to come across as serious as it actually is. Even more mystifyingly, in the case of this particular subject, I've heard people say "well, that doesn't happen anymore" - no, it doesn't - because we pasteurize our fucking milk.......
:beats head against a wall: Obviously not leveled at anyone here, just venting. (June 3, 2013 at 11:40 am)Minimalist Wrote: Poor? LOL, in the case of raw milk Min, the cat food is most often more expensive than the people food. "The Poor" aint downing Bubba's Super Fresh Raw Milk - they're on WIC, getting the good shit. Speaking of, we used to peddle some of that catfood (and other luxury goods) at a market stand that helped to foot the bill of some water conservation research- the customers regularly remarked about how healthy my table must be (as a producer of their trendy goods) - I always got a kick out of reminding them that they didn't pay me enough to be able to afford to eat the shit that I grew, or the shit that I clubbed for them.

Has nothing to do with pasteurization but still worth mentioning in this context: Quote:The 2008 Chinese milk scandal was a food safety incident in the People's Republic of China, involving milk and infant formula, and other food materials and components, adulterated with melamine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Chinese_milk_scandal RE: Wisconsin Pushes to Have Raw Milk Farmer Vernon Hershberger Jailed

I guess there's a little Darwinist in me that says let them do what they want, they're taking their own risks and will suffer the consequences, natural selection. I agree it's unfair to subject helpless kids and possibly jeopardize their lives... But I also think its impossible to stop parents who are convinced raw milk is the way to go from giving it to their kids. I'm generally a live and let live person... But there's something to possible mass public infections, in which case public health trumps individual desires. Maybe it should just be banned...(June 3, 2013 at 11:12 am)festive1 Wrote: I kinda agree with you... Kids should be protected from their parent's stupidity... I'm on the fence I guess We vax against fucking chicken pox, could you imagine the mass hysteria if there were some mutant small/cow pox outbreak, which could happen with this raw milk craze... Those cultures that leveraged cattle (or other milk producers) heavily have a very widespread distribution of the mutation in question. If you don't have it, don't drink it - really simple. Not to mention Rickets is really not a good thing to develop...

The idea that the kind of moderate sun exposure that will get our body's internal vitamin D production going is already harmfull all things considered is really not uncontroversial: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-ed...e-22433359 I'll trust a walk in the sun and spending time in the half-shade much more than any kind of concentrated vitamin pill. But I guess we all take our chances. Hmm endie?
I live in Australia mate... even spending time in half shade will give you sun cancer here. 5 mins in the sun here in summer is enough. Woe betide if you have to work outside. Of course you are welcome to come here for an experiment "The Universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements: energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest." G'Kar-B5

Perhaps you'll reread your link at notice the part where D levels were unaffected in both groups - now read back a few pages to the part where I explained why that is so. "Trusting" in the sun to do something that it does not do...is strange, to say the least. Do you think that a giant ball of gas is something that needs to be trusted...or is in the business of doing something for your benefit that deserves trust? If you're in an area, at a time, and meet the biological requirements that are involved in the production of D from UV, 10 minutes in the sun will do (and then some). If you are not, take the pill, drink the milk....do whatever.
