It doesn't really surprise me that Obama is so terrible when it comes to this issue. He's all about federal power and never been a states rights guys. He's also been openly opposed to marijuana use in any form from the start of his presidency.

Holders of political office generally don't act to restrain the powers of that office. Powers of an office usually have to be taken away by forces outside of it.

From all of history, I know of only one exception to this above rule. George Washington had his faults, but he did get our democracy off to a good start by using the powers of the President with restraint and establishing the precedent of only-two-terms.

I wouldn't go as far as all drugs should be legalized. They should all be decriminalized, yes. Legalizing marijuana and ecstasy likely not too big a deal, but for other more dangerous drugs, decriminalization should be sufficient. I mean there are plenty of prescription medication you won't be able to get over the counter right now because the risk of taking it by mistake outweighs the benefit, legalizing means allowing recreational drugs to be marketed and sold commercially like alcohol and cigarettes. That's not such a good idea until it's shown that the harm isn't significant.

Should clarify that ecstasy does cause some brain damage (not like something bashed into your head) but has been shown to cause cell death if i'm not mistaken. Although not as much as the fake study showed.

The 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951 which limits the president to two terms. Unless you're saying that Washington proposed the idea, but it didn't take hold until long after he was dead.

It was by action that he established the precedent. To the best of my knowledge, it became a tradition that only FDR broke, and that was due to the economic crisis followed by WWII.

The tradition was a powerful one in the American psyche even without a formal amendment. Anyone seeking to break that rule faced the "oh, so you think you're better than Washington, huh?" factor. Teddy Roosevelt ran for a third term unsuccessfully and suffered an attempted assassination by a "no-more-than-two-terms" fanatic.

Washington also sought to restrain the powers of his office in other ways. He would only veto a bill if he could argue it was unconstitutional. Part of the outrage against later President Jackson is that he was AFAIK the first president to veto bills just because he wanted to. He was called by some "king Jackson" and depicted in cartoons as ruling with a scepter in the shape of a veto letter.

Those more versed in American history can correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. It's what I remember from my high school days.

Well maybe not for a couple years until the cartels run out of residual drug money from illicit trade (with drugs legalized, that drug trade falls apart), but the Mexican Drug War will likely come to an end.

With drugs legalized, drug trade wouldn't just stop would it? Unless the legal parties are selling drugs for a cheaper price. Which would be hard considering we actually have to make sure we're selling proper stuff and that requires money plus tax from government to deter kids from buying it, other regulations, plus money for advertisement, etc. etc. While the illegal sellers just have to lower their price, which they can afford to do since smuggling would be a lot easier to do.

Not to mention designer drugs.
