The Last Movie You Watched
RE: The Last Movie You Watched
Going to watch avengers tomorrow. I know there is like a sequence with many movies before this one. But not bothered with that. So hope it makes sense.

Dances With Wolves... I've been waiting for years for that to come on TV again, and finally it has... one of my favourite films of all time Smile It was on earlier in the week on the same channel but was very unsatisfactory because a) it was on in the daytime... pre-watershed... and thus had many scenes cut, b) it had no subtitles for the Native American dialogue... which was just silly, and c) as TV channels are wont to do, as soon as the end credits came on they shrunk to a tiny and unreadable (even with zoom) box right on the cast list while the channel did its blurb about what was on next... and I'm thinking... 'couldn't you at least wait until after the cast list before you do that?' Dodgy Anyway, a few days later... it's just been on again, but this time at night - so no scenes cut, with the appropriate subtitles in place, and with no channel blurb at all on the end credits (probably because it was so late when it ended)! So thank you Channel 5 for correcting all three of your mistakes Wink and giving me a recording I can treasure.

Just watched "The Witch".

There's no particular interesting dramatic twists in my opinion in this film.

The things that save the film and make it just a notch above mediocre are the fact that some of the events and script are actually from historical writings, court documents and so on from the period which are related to how people saw witchcraft at the time.
The acting is also alright.
The atmosphere is believable and there's a good few weird, gruesome messed up scenes that don't take it too far and are used pretty thoughtfully.

They have a disclaimer for the film saying how the script is formed from old documents and court papers and whatever, I think it was an odd move for them to put this disclaimer at the end.  If I wasn't sure about the film from the start that definitely would have hooked me in, instead it's at the end when I've already seen the film.

7 out of 10.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

Watched Coco a couple days ago, and it's an excellent film. I can only think of a few flaws:
  • The color scheme, especially for the Land of the Dead scenes is pretty damn gaudy. At this point, I think it's reasonable to attribute my distaste for the loud colors (shockingly close to Problem Solverz levels) is at least partly due to my being a Gringo with different expectations on what color schemes should be.
  • The extremely detailed wrinkles on Grandma Coco are downright unnerving.
  • And related to the big twist at the end:

Other than that, it's one of the best films of last year, and it's no wonder that it became the top-grossing film in Mexican history after 2 1/2 weeks. And it's certainly interesting to see Gael Garcia Bernal as a voice actor.

I watched The Florida Project last night. It provides a usually overlooked (by Hollywood, anyway) slice of contemporary American life centered on a group of people living on the margins, practically in the shadow of Disney World. The contrast between the lives of the adult characters, who scrape to get by any way they can, and the wide-eyed wonder of the children who either don't understand or don't care that they're poor is handled remarkably well and adds up to an experience that is, by turns, unsettling, funny, depressing, and beautiful.

I have only seen a handful of other films that do so well at seeing the world through a child's eyes.

Recommended.

S.O.B. 1981, Blake Edwards. If you haven't seen it, find it.

"THEM!" Big Bug Movie. This 1954 production was released the same year "Gojira" was released in Japan. Hollyweird went crazy for the BBMs for a while after that, roughly 64 years and counting to date.

Best trivia: Leonard Nimoy has an uncredited part as an Army sergeant making fun of Texans.
