We aren't going to know, are we? Since he just ran him over. Funny that the guy tailing the "suspect" did not feel compelled to take action against this one-man crime wave, though. He doesn't seem to have been terribly worried.

Your statement just demonstrated your complete ignorance on my position and I highly doubt you've read much of this thread. Otherwise you would know that I was the one who would most often call psychoslice out. If you had bothered to properly read my comments, you would know that I didn't condone the officers actions. Well he is holding a gun, all he needs to do is raise his arm and twitch his finger and someone dies. And I'm sure the police would have been blamed for handling it badly if that had happened. Is deadly force only justified if he was pointing the gun at you? He was acting irratic and there was no telling what he was gunna do. I think when you get to the point of walking down the street, rifle in hand, aiming at yourself and other people and shooting into the air, you kind of deserve to get by a car. At least no one else got hurt.

And what would you be saying, I wonder, if when the cops had the chance to take him out, but didn't and he went on to walk into a school and kill fifty kids? It's easy to criticize but the world isn't as black and white as you would like it to be. I've already stated that the incident wasn't handled as well as it could have been, but considering what could have happened, how many people could have died, it wasn't a terrible outcome. What made this worse was the guy was unpredictable, he could have turned around and shot at the approaching police car, he could have broken into a home and taken them hostage. I was never defending the officer, just stating that I don't care that this guy got run over, and the outcome wasn't as bad as it could have been.

-ignoring how absurdly rare that an event like that is...and how purile it makes the question in context....I'd call it a tragedy - but nothing that any cop could have or should have prevented in such a manner. Unfortunately (or fortunately, imo) our system is set up so that you actually have to -commit- said crime before that crime can be used as a justification for why the state acted against your interests. Committing some other crime does not immediately invite such wonderment, and I'm appalled at how quickly discussions go from zero to douche whenever this line is drawn in the sand. We could end a hell of alot of crime before it ever occurs if we just let the cops go out on random citizen duckshoots every morning. We don't..because it's a bad idea. It doesn't become a better idea if the citizens being shot have committed some other crime. Or, in this case..rather than shot..run over. Personally, I -do- care that this guy got run over....and I bet you'd want me to care..if it were you.
Whatever happened to being handcuffed, tossed in a jail cell, and being put on trial? When did everything become a potential shooting and/or maiming offense...and when did we become okay with this? I think that cops might want to take a lesson from Barney, and keep their bullets in their pockets (along with their car keys..apparently...is there anything that they can be trusted with ffs?)
