You also have to have a modicum of intelligence. There are people out there that, no matter how hard they practice, will struggle to grasp basic algebra.

You also have to have the interest. Intellectually I understand how important higher mathematics is. Personally, I don't like it.

I can multiply, add, substract, divide, fractionize the shit out of up to 6 or 7 digit numbers with each other in my head just thinking. Not writing anything down.

But you throw all that serious shit at me like physics, where I don't even recognize the symbols being used, because I was so personally not interested in even getting to that level, then I just shrug.

I'm not a higher math guy. It just makes me sad spending my time trying to learn about that.

Give me biology, give me evolution, give me microbiology, give me electronics (I can convert between decimal, octal (yeah that old shit), hexidecimal, and binary in NO time), give me geology, give me history... I'm enthrall.

Higher mathematics is crucial for the progression of scientific knowledge and humanity learning more about the Universe. For you and I to live or do all the things you and I do? We got all we need.

Math is VITALLY important to our species. I just don't need to know the more complex portions for what I, as an individual, do.

@Rahul & Maelstrom, yea some people don't like math. It's a problem when they don't like it cos they're bad at it, and if they're bad at it because they weren't taught right, not because they lack the ability/interest. Because then a whole bunch of people are produced systematically to hate math and don't go on to do math heavy sciences and math itself in university. I believe in keeping a kid good at all the subjects up to grade 12 level so they have all the options when it comes time for what they want to do in life. Even if you major in biological sciences, you need to be able to do quadratic functions at least for chemistry calculations. Some of my classmates find it hard to do even the ecological calculations for populations when we were doing evolution courses.

Ahaha, awww those symbols are my favorite part. I love tau, rho, omega, phi, delta, all of them. Oh and Del is my favorite math operator of all time. When I see those symbols I want to figure them out. It's a shame they turn away so many people, but I really can't blame you or mael for being like "wat? fuck this" and it's cool that you still have an appreciation for math.

This reminds me of an incident when I was in high school. I was an intelligent slacker, and my calculus teacher didn't like the fact that I wasn't putting effort into. So, she didn't really care for me. One day when she was handing back tests, she gave me mine with a 'C' on it, and I said, "Yes," because I was absolutely certain I had failed it. She says to me(in front of the whole class), "Why are you glad you got a 'C'?" I told her I thought I failed and was happy to get that grade. She went on and on about the importance of math and how we should apply ourselves towards it for our careers in the future. "When am I ever going to use calculus?" She flew into a mini-rant about how important it is to our careers, and capped it off by asking me what I wanted to be. I looked at her and calmly said, "A writer."

All she said was, "oh," and she went back to what she was doing.

heh. Yeah, I've never needed higher math.

When I went into the military I went into an Advanced Electronics field.

The first school was six months of training on resistors, capacitors, transistors, DC circuits, AC circuits, etc. All component level detail of electronics.

After I completed the other two schools and got to my command we'd work on repairing broken mainframes and peripherals.

Did we troubleshoot or repair anything to the component level?

No. If the card was broken we pulled it out and put in a new one.

No one gave a shit which component failed.

To the OP I would say education, like government, can be done poorly. But it isn't necessary. There can be an element of self fulfilling prophesy in this, intended as when the republicans demonstrate again why they shouldn't be trusted to govern, or unintended as when in a spirit of hopelessness we refuse to invest in education.
