Agnosticism is not a middle ground. It is a position on whether one claims to KNOW if a god exists or not.
Agnosticism does not concern belief.
If you answer, "I don't know" to the question, "do you BELIEVE a god exists?, you are not answering the correct question.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
