Why I Am Pro-Life

At conception, the zygote is a single-cell organism, no more a being than an amoebae.

Until it has a brain, it isn't a being.

Now it could someday become a being if a natural abortion does not occur. But the woman's rights exist at all times. "Definitely now" trumps "maybe someday".

Every relevant biology source one can check, whether textbook or online, describes the biological life cycle of Homo sapiens as beginning with the fertilized egg or zygote (Saladin, 2001; Browder, 1991; Moore, 1982; see also “Human” in Wikipedia, specifically the biology section describing the human life cycle).

That it doesn't feel pain yet... seemingly your only qualifier discounting it's humanity.. doesn't alter the fact that you're dealing with a unique human life. Ending that life prevents a human developing, and it began developing at conception, unless all of the science I reference is incorrect.

RE: Why I Am Pro-Life
@fr0d0, unique isn't such a big deal in biology. In fact being identical is a bigger deal, because almost every living thing is unique. So I wouldn't care too much about that. And at conception isn't a big deal either, most miscarriages occur before the embryo implants, and no one even notices it.

As for textbooks calling it human, honestly does anyone here really believe that a zygote is a different species? No, it's homosapiens, which is what human means in a science text. But if you want to argue that it has humanity which is a vaguely defined term, or that it is "human" in the way we say some murderers are inhuman even though they're clearly our species, then you need to make a case not based on science textbooks.

I do care about suffering, and so I weigh the mother's suffering with the fetus/zygote's suffering. But I think that's a personal criteria (just like being unique is your personal criteria) and I wouldn't dream of telling someone else what is right and what is wrong. And everyone might want to note that before the embryo implants, you can take drugs to abort. But surgical abortion, at least in Toronto, is only offered at 4 weeks.

Your science is correct. Your logic that follows is what is faulty.

Until it has a brain, it isn't a being. Until it's a being, it isn't a being. If it's not a being, it doesn't have rights. Q.E.D.

@ pineapple
"Unique" is quite important. If I aborted you you would never exist. Another you wouldn't come along again. You are important.

@DP
So my references are correct, a human (being) begins from conception, but until it has a brain it isn't a being??

You're contradicting yourself.

It doesn't have "rights" according to whatever judicial system you choose. That's quite arbitrary.

Blame DP. He came out with this nonsensical statement:

"I'm amazed that there are any non-
religious people who are anti-choice, at
least any who stay that way for long."

Nope. Unique is important to who? to me? who doesn't exist? to other people? who lived without my uniqueness and never knew what it was? uniqueness is everywhere, it's not special. it doesn't give you rights. i don't get to claim anything for being unique. Because everyone is, even the identical twins eventually become unique. Whether I'm important is still to be seen. My mum is important, too. If giving birth to me will make her poor and depressed, I'd rather not be here, because she's important.

Do you watch the disney movie, what's it called, the Incredibles? In this one scene where the little boy who can run really fast says he's special, and his mum said to him, "yes, but everyone's special". And he said, "that's just another way of saying no one is."

Unique is not special.
