It goes back to the 1950's sci fi movies where the aliens were always further advanced than us and always wanting to invade earth. I think that's a reflection of the "them commies want to invade the good ol' USA!" sentiment that was running rampant throughout the country at the time.
Except for maybe a few old Star Trek episodes, alien societies are usually always portrayed as far more technologically advanced than we are. Would be interesting to see a scenario where we travel to another planet and are seen as the invaders with superior technology.
