And, looking on Amazon.de, I've found that the book I believe to be the definitive account of the conflict, James McPherson's "The Battle Cry of Freedom" is even available in German, under the title of Für die Freiheit sterben. Sadly, Shelby Foote's three-volume account isn't available in German, but, of course, since the author was from Mississippi, a state that only officially ratified the abolition of slavery six months ago, it does have a slight Pro-Confederate bias.
I enjoy Foote's narrative. The confederacy makes for a more interesting story, though, even if their motives were questionable(through the lens of time.) I lived for years right on the edge of Chickamauga Battlefield, and was a soldier stationed on Ft. Bragg, so maybe I'm jaded.
Yeah, US history intrigues me. Also, ancient Chinese/Japanese/Egyptian history...for various reasons.

...Wasn't that area referred to as the cradle of civilization? A lot of powerful ancient empires and kingdoms like Assyria, Babylon, and Sumeria rose and fell there...interesting history in that region.

I am interested in history, mainly the era between 137 - 100 million centuries BC, As well as the era between 46 million century BC and now.
Oh, you mean the era when hairless apes ran riot and tool making was king? Yeah, I am interested in that too.

Indeed. The crazy part is that I have to give the presentation entirely in Arabic.

Wonder what ever happened to the Sumerians? They didn't speak a Semitic language either did they?

Sumarian was not a semitic language. But descendants of sumerians gradually adopted Akkadian, a Semitic language, as their vernacular. Sumarian language itself was retained as language of learning and education, sort of like Latin and Greek today, until interest in learning and education was swept away by Christianity and Islam.

There is not really any area of history which doesn't fascinate me.
