He's a creationist who has duped a number of idiots (including Kirk Cameron, who has become his high profile chimp). One of his talking points, until fairly recently, was that the banana was evidence of God's design because, due to its size and shape, it fit so well in the human hand. He was unaware that the contemporary banana is the result of human selection.

Needless to say (though I will), he is a walking punch line -- almost as bad as Kent Hovind.

I really, really think he is for real but just not very bright. I think he believes what he's selling but like most Christians doesn't question any of it because that would put a damper on his faith. The reason I don't think he's very smart, aside from not knowing that what we know as the banana was engineered by man, but because he didn't even know that humans have a blind spot in our eyes. Someone brought up the blind spot in our eyes as an example of imperfect design, and Ray claimed he not only doesn't have a blind spot, but anyone who does should immediately go to an eye doctor.

Anyone else ever watch King of the Hill? The character Peggy Hill always had a very high opinion of herself and thought she was much smarter than she was, though her ignorance got her in over her head now and then, and despite realizing she's not as smart as she thinks, she keeps getting into new situations. I think of Ray Comfort the same way. He thinks he's vastly more intelligent than evolutionary biologists, and he thinks he's vastly more intelligent than he really is, and it leads him into making some royal gaffes like the banana claims and the blind spot gaffe.
