Would be likely for Extra terrestrial to have a religion?
Or atleast have had a religion at some point in their history, I'm curious about this as a writer. (I know my english on these forums sucks)

Is your E.T social?

If your ET is visiting earth from somewhere else, it has to be social. Because a lot of cooperation is needed to achieve a voyage like this. Of course this is assuming they got here voluntarily and weren't stuffed into a spaceship by more advanced ETs taking over their home planet and drift to earth.

I personally think that social beings with a certain level of intelligence are likely to have a religion. But I think it's highly probable they do not, as well.

My reasoning for why they have a religion is because religion has occurred in different cultures independently from each other.

My reasoning for why they do not is because their brains may be very different from ours, and may not have such things as "beliefs". Or are not capable of compartmentalizing as we are. It's hard to say, we know so little about our own brains as it is.

Hm, idk, when speculating about how ETs function modelling off earth animals/insects isn't very reliable is it? I always find tv aliens to resemble humans/animals too much.

In the story I'm playing with they would be likely pyschologically like us somewhat as they bipedal (therapod like) and desert dwelling, I'm too much of a larry niven fan to do star trek aliens.

I would say they have/had a religion if they're psychologically similar to us. Whether or not they grew out of it is the question.

No doubt that they would have religion at some point but I don't think that they would still have it now.

edit: Ok, that came off a bit snarky. I have a lot of problems with the question as asked.

1. 'Extra terrestrial' covers a whopping great lot of ground. Are you talking about the methane-eating amoebae of Prophyllax-4, or about the hyper-intelligent Mammilio-Crustateans of the Rubbish Belt of Beteguese? Or something in the middle?

2. At what stage of development are your ETs? Do they get about in starships, or are they still sitting round the fire and wondering how it got there?

3. What is their history like? Have they had (like humanity) a series of disasters that would give rise to religious myths?

4. Do they have a social structure analagous to ours, with father/mother figures and the sort of social conflicts that might inculcate religious attitudes?

5. As apophenia asked, what do you mean by religion? Are you looking for something akin to traditional Western religions, or something more nebulous (like Buddhism), or did you have in mind a kind of folk religion, with magic spells and ancestor worship?

Kind of fun to speculate about, but - as I said - we'll never know.

I am a hundred percent certain that a species that has advanced so far that it unlockes the secrets of intergalagtic space travel, will have left behind the dogmas of relegion before it ventured into a different solar system.
