What's everyone up to right now?
RE: What's everyone up to right now?

Working on my budgeting spreadsheet. I've made a ton of changes to improve itemization, but somewhere I introduced a $50 error. I've been working on it for over two hours and I need a break. Depending on how things go at the end of the month, as there's a $30 deposit about the same time as a $40 withdrawal, I'll either be fine, or short $10. (ETA: It looks like the withdrawal is a day before the deposit. That's my internet. Maybe I'll just let it be disconnected for a day or two.) I'm budgeting $20 for the Vietnamese New Year celebration, and I've got $10 in cash for bus fare - that and about $10 in returns should go back in my account, leaving $30 for the New Year's celebration ($20, figuring $10 in miscellaneous at the end of the month). I've also figured out how to afford the 55 gallon aquarium I want to buy next month. I've got enough food reserves to last the first week or two of February; I budget $40 a week for food, so if I coast on what I have, that will give me over $200 to buy the aquarium and parts to build a stand.

So much to do. Read 800 pages by the 23rd, finish budgeting, spend 4-8 hours reorganizing by Friday, prototype a media pc for my sister. It's going to be a busy week. Fortunately I go play with the Dachshunds on Saturday. I'll need the refreshment.

Sardines in olive oil and smoked kippered herring. I'm planning to read for 4 hours in a short while, so I want to put my hunger on hold.

Political documentaries on Netflix suck. I can't find much substantive discussion or information. It's all "rich people scary derpy derp."

Had a nice workout at SDSU, but it was blistering hot today. No bueno.

Soaking up AC now. Pondering dinner. Waiting for my Mounds bar to refrigerate.

My impression is that Netflix has a lot of documentaries, but they're almost uniformly either less popular History channel stuff, or bargain basement quality. One afternoon, I wanted to watch some documentaries on serial killers. What I found was, with the exception of a single documentary, all the material having to do with serial killers was fictionalized treatments. I was so disgusted that I couldn't even find enough true documentaries just to sate me for a few hours. I don't watch a lot of TV or movies, but anymore, I research titles and aquire them through libraries or other non-streaming distribution channels. On top of everything else, the streaming ability of their servers sucks. I have a 6 mbs pipe which typically delivers a solid 4 mbs. Even at medium quality rating (needs 1-1.5 mbs), the bandwidth I get from their servers is frequently in the 0.7 to 0.9 range, causing frequent pauses for buffering, and stutters in playback. My payment card has lapsed with them, so I may just not renew and concentrate on getting all my content centrally hosted on a home theater pc; I've got multiple terabytes of movies and shows on disk, I don't need them. And I have Amazon Prime; not as many documentaries and less free stuff, but I can use them for the odd fix I need that I can't satisfy otherwise.
