I don't do much color printing, but I do occasionally use the scanner, which cheap laser printers lack.  I could keep my current printer and double with a laser printer, but that seems less desirable than just getting a good all-in-one inkjet.  Canon sells a line of SOHO inkjets, the cheapest of which is currently about the same price as a comparable monochrome laser, so that's probably what I'll go with.  I looked at an Epson and Brother printer for $60 each, but the Epson had a lot of one-star reviews, and the Canon had high ink costs.  I'll get back $10 of the difference in cost of the Canon MB2120 with my first ink purchase.  I don't do any photo printing so inkjet quality is more than satisfactory.

Have you looked at the HP ENVY printers? They have decent ratings. The 5055 has print/scan/copy:

(ETA:  The HP ENVY 5055 uses a combined color cartridge and replacement carts are more expensive than for the Canon MB2120. The HP might have better color print quality, but that's not a high priority.  The edge probably goes to the Canon.)

I've got the 5530, looks like the same cartridge set up, one color, one black. Since we only print in black it's the only cartridge that gets replaced. I think the cost is around $14.00. 

But I'm not techy so maybe I'm missing something. Oh well.

I generally print mostly black, too. I don't know about the two cartridge printers, but the 4/6 cartridge printers use color + black when printing even black only, and once you run out of any of the three colors (or black), you have to replace the whole cartridge. With the single color cartridge, that means you end up throwing out a lot of ink. And with the single cartridges on the Canon, the cost is only about $6. I haven't totally ruled it out, but in general I prefer the 4/6 cart printers to the two cart ones. Reading some of the reviews, the ENVY printers are rather slow as well. That's not a priority for me, given how little I print, but it's not a problem with the Canon. The flipside of that is that the slower output probably produces better quality prints. However, the reviews state that the text print of the Canon is razor sharp, and that's my primary use, so the Canon scores well in that department, even if it loses some points for less than stellar color and photo printing. (I'm also noticing that the remanufactured cartridges for the HP generally come in pairs of both color and black, meaning I'd likely have to replace both any time one ran low, unless I can find remanufactured singles. Amazon's price for original carts are $32 for the black, and $26 for the color cart. That's a lot compared to the Canon. Looking at a couple of different HP models, it's the same story across the line.)

(ETA: I found a source for cheaper HP carts, but they're still more than the corresponding Canon carts, $16/$18 to the Canon's $6 a cart. [Or $11 at the same place as the HP carts.] Time to wade into the Amazon reviews....)

Encouraging, but out of my price range at the moment. A comparable black only Canon unit is $180.
