My poor hens look ragged.  They tried to roost in the trees last night instead of their house.  I had to get out there with a ladder and broom at o-dark thirty to shoo the little irritants down and pen em up.  Every year this time frostbitten crops and wattles are a problem - not an issue later in the winter when it's 10f or lower..but dry.

Funny thing about it, is that the whole 29 and wet thing is part of the reason we picked this region.  Back in ye olden times of the 2010's when we were looking to really throw our chips in, in the back of my mind, I just knew that we were going to blow right through that 2degree warming marker...and this place, just one or two degrees warmer on average (combined with my thermal mass greenhouse) means a 365 day growing season without the pests of places that have 365day growing seasons.  Super important for a system that by virtue of it's design can incorporate absolutely no pesticides whatsoever. Not even "organic" pesticides.

It helps that there was a failed push for greenhouse business in the state beforehand, too - they're laying all over the place like beached whale skeletons.

Oh ICK. We had temps in the 50s earlier this week for highs and a cold steady rain.

I learned on bivouac during basic training just how awful being cold and wet is. I was in NE Alabama and we set out for camp after three steady days of rain. Then it snowed on us for like the first time in memory in that area. FACK! No possibility of getting dry or warm. Then we were back to our WWII barracks that were never warm and hot water was at a premium. That was the last time I ever went camping...no, just no.

My basic training experience was trying to sleep in red clay in january. I went from there to germany......where it's a pinch colder...and from there to the caucasus....where it was a pinch colder.....and from there to the desert where its..no..fuck it, no more pinches. It's -cold- at night, in the desert.

....but at least it never rains, lol.

All of this, mind you, as A Florida Man. You can get a noticeably warm shower at night under the stars on christmas where I grew up. Great place for chickens. Except for all the time when it's fucking hot, ofc. You're making me think about the keys. Nobody owns them...they're just there. Chillin, hanging out, enjoying the keys, wandering from shade shrub to shade shrub.

Here's one for Beccs. I can relate big time. I hurt so much losing my last one that it's been 2 years and I still don't know if I can go through this again.

Picked up a bottle of the new, Johnnie Walker High Rye blended scotch whiskey. Making whiskey highballs.

It's 1705 daylight savings time.  Right now it's 22C (71.6 F) in here and quite humid.

I've just had a local barber run over the dome and beard with a number 3. Bloke is operating from  home. He quoted me $25. At the local shopping centre it's $40. He asked me if I was over 70. When I said I am he offered me the haircut free, or pay much as I could afford. Gave him the full $25, because it's a budgeted expense which I can  afford. Still, a very nice thought.

I tried a wee dram of the Jonnie Walker High Rye I bought. It's a great mixer, but not a great sipper. Very strong rye influence, with a bit too much alcohol bite.

Still sick, but recovering after seeing a doctor. Haven't eaten much since Wednesday, still hard to keep up on hydration.
