I've just given a statement to the British Transport Police after getting scammed by a con artist. I feel so fucking stupid now and keep doing that thing where my brain unhelpfully tells me how to fix it by going back in time. Gah.

A lady came to me with £180 in £10s and asked me to for £20s. So I gave her the £180 in £20s and then she said she wanted Euros. So I told her we don't have Euros here and she started asking me why and then asked me where she could get Euros, so I told her (assuming she was one of the dozens of stupid tourists we get looking for Euros). So she gave me back the £20s and I gave her back her £10s. As she was walking away I noticed she only gave me back £100, but thanks to stupid bulletproof glass, I couldn't get to her before she was gone.

I'm so fucking annoyed with myself for falling for it. I know those scams exist. I'm the 4th person in my office that this has happened to in the last few years. I just assumed she was a tourist, so I only even checked the notes afterwards out of habit. I didn't expect anything to be amiss at all. I'm gonna be in sooo much trouble for this shit.

Thanks. I keep trying to tell myself that, but I know that I could have avoided being robbed and wish I had just checked she'd given back the right amount before giving her her money back. I'm worried I might lose my job now. And if they catch her I'll have to go to court and I don't do well with public speaking at all, so I don't want to do that either. :-(

It's a clever approach; acting like a clueless tourist will almost always lower the defenses of the person dealing with them and make it easier for them to con you. I don't think it's a surprise that it works so often, and I suspect that it would work just as effectively on most of us.

Nah there are a surprising number of sensitive and caring young ladies here. Losty said I made her cry. That avatar was my favorite, it was not easy removing it, and a lot of guys liked it, but women don't understand our sense of humor. Since females are my moral compass, I bend my will to theirs (pussy whipped ), provided they aren't just PMS n "I'm a women hear me roar" bitch!
