I had my first two clients last night. One even gave me a tip when I finished the service. While tipping isn't required (because we are a school) it is appreciated.

I guess people who are getting their haircuts at schools are sometimes doing that because they are short on cash, so the other person may be excused, but this being America, giving a tip should be the standard, no?

Not at a school. Most tip. Clients get super cheap pricing on services compared to salons and since students aren't licensed but they are under the supervision of someone with a cosmetology teaching license, we're allowed to perform those services. People come to the school to get services for a variety of reasons. Our regular, dedicated clients are there because they know we need live models to work on and they are happy to help. For others, it does come down to cost. When you have a little old lady coming in for her weekly roller set, it can be quite costly in a regular salon.

I don't expect a tip, but its nice when they are given.

In your average hair salon your stylist is renting her spot. That tip guarantees she actually makes money after paying her rent. In a school your stylist is a student this isn't her job and she isn't renting a spot. It's not really the same thing and tipping in a school isn't the standard.

Actually in PA, renting a chair is now illegal for a cosmetologist. They either have to be an employee or they can't work there. This curriculum we are learning about the state laws, as 25 of our state board questions (the REAL test) will be on just the laws of PA. If you fail four or more of those questions, you fail the entire test.

As a school student, in Pre-salon, you are not allowed to work on any client. As a Senior student, I am considered a "stylist" and do have permission to work on real clients. The catch to that is the teacher must be present on the floor at all times to oversee all the work done by the students. We have a notice posted at the counter, on the wall, that must legally be visible to all clients stating such. It reads: All services are performed by senior-level students, under the direction and supervision of the instructor. Prices and fees charged are not for the actual services, but for the reasonable cost of any supplies used."
Each client must also sign a waiver every time they come in, that they understand these terms and are not guaranteed "professional" results. They get professional results anyway, but in case there is a fuck up, this waiver releases the school, the teacher and the student from being held liable.

On the flip side a barber can rent a chair in PA. I don't understand why that is, but it's allowed.
