That's because you don't properly configure your e-reader...
I have mine on minimal backlight setting (it's automatic, no light around, means it dims the backlight to the minimum), black background with white letters. Works perfectly! Even on the bus to work, in the morning! 
I have my iPad on full brightness when I read at night and I can still barely get through a couple pages before I start nodding off.
