Tia Maria and Kahlua are different brands of essentially the same thing. I never could understand why every bar I worked had both.

Tia Maria is a little less syrupy. Otherwise, they taste the same.

Oh, and if you ever land a job tending bar, I strongly recommend you not break a bottle of Kahlua while pulling it out of the speed rack 15 minutes into a 12 hour shift -- especially if your feet are under the rack. It is a distinctly uncomfortable experience, though your feet will make cool, squishy sounds every time you take a step.

I always thought a black Russian was a measure each of vodka and liquor de cafe, like a white Russian sans dairy.  Is that not what it is?

Exactly. A Black Russian is vodka and Kahlua strained on the rocks, 5:3 ratio. In a White Russian, replace two portions of the vodka with half-and-half.

But I've never been a barkeep -- those proportions were the ones I liked.
