They are not thinking. They have given up that right to their pastor and god.

The definition of atheist that many of these former 'atheists' use is not the same as the one we use.

Many 'former atheists' that I have talked to consider themselves as atheists in their past in retrospect. They are usually people that had a wild, party life when they were younger. Or maybe they were a bit of a thief, or heavily into drugs.

In other words, since they didn't have their alleged 'relationship with Jesus', they were an atheist.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
