I feel dirty for voting the same way as vinny, but knowledge can be gained without science, yes, but to a price. If you ask me what is the more efficient way to obtain knbowledge, then it is science, it is a discipline focused on that, but its not the only way, as was previously shown by many others.
The price you pay is the hability to adapt knowledge to variation, you know something, but not much. Science goes to the detail of knowing.

well for human beauty , it has, as well as for good music ...
grief, it has as well as a neurological explanation..

But how do you determine what is rational with the scientific method?
Clarification needed, please. I'm half asleep so you'll have to detail the question a bit more before I can answer.

You said, "I don't claim to know these things until I determine them to be rational." By what method of gaining knowledge do you determine the standard for what is and isn't rational?

Maybe my logic WAS circular, so I'm not understanding the question, or maybe I'm just too tired to get my mind back on the track of thought it was chugging along. I'll figure that out later. That or I'll pop some more adderall and see if it makes more sense to me then.
Hmm...or maybe I haven't thought hard enough about this. I can't really think of what methodology I used to determine a standard of rationality...and in fact, I don't ever remember the particular point where my current standards came to be. Admittedly they seem to coincide with me taking science far more seriously...but specifically? I don't know. I'll have to think about it.

The way i see it, Science is about how nature works and the mechanism by which govern our reality. However, there are plenty of intangible things that science do not cover and are manufactured with our minds. The mind itself natural, however the thoughts are of sentient origins. Basically while science remains in he realms of reality, sentience allows us to gain knowledge in areas outside of reality. Such as philosophy, writing (fictions, fantasies and what not.) and music. This is a very subjective term, however I think as humans and being illuminated beings we can bend reality and percieve things beyond what reality will allow alot of times using science .

I was! Most atheists who can put two brain cells pleasure themselves on the science vs religion dichotomy and come to treat science itself as an object of religious affection. The result being, quite naturally, the delusion that science answers all questions.
But to have this position you must (1) be familiar with science and how it works, and (2) be smart enough to distinguish between how religion sees knowledge vs how science sees knowledge. Ironically many people here don't even have enough of an interest in science to agree with the false dichotomy of science vs religion.
Ignorance can be progress, it seems!

Actually, algorithm for beauty, grief, and good music is in principle within the purview of science, even if those of us who foolishly regarded our innermost selves as above complete penetration by mere science would, and richly deservedly, be insulted by this fact.
