Consoles typically have a leg up on hardware(value-wise) for the first while, but unfortunately by the time you get developers who know how to tap that power, PC hardware blows past.
For the average computer-illiterate shmoe, PC gaming can be daunting. Making sure you meet the minimum requirements, ensuring your settings are giving you the best balance between quality and performance, managing retarded DRM. Not to mention installation.
Any grandma can see any Xbox game and know that she won't have to do anything beyond placing the game in the tray and start playing. That's a big advantage that console gaming offers. I know that's of no use to you, but it's true.
As far as costs go, don't even try to tell me you've spent less money on your PC in the last 4 years than I've paid for an Xbox360. If you're a serious PC gamer, you've definitely paid more for your hardware than I have if you're staying up to date.
I like console gaming because it's standardized, it's easy, and I prefer controllers over keyboards. Playing games on a keyboard is like driving a car with a typewriter for me.
And calling a gaming console a functionally limited machine is like saying the same about your toaster because it won't open your beer. A game console plays games, and more. They aren't PCs, and it seems that's your beef with them.

Red rings are bad. Fortunately, Microsoft's warranty is excellent.
I've had a few friends experience the red ring. They got a replacement console within a week and half, at no cost.
My first 360 had an issue where my disk-tray wouldn't open. This was after about a year of heavy trouble-free usage. I got a new one 2 weeks later.

Microsoft always rushes production before the have had a chance to test the products enough to find all the bugs, Apple, Nintendo, and Sony don't do this, and so their products are more stable as far as glitching and bugs. That is why you wait a couple months after new microsoft products come out to buy them, so they have a chance to fix most of the bugs and whatnot.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

The Red Rings have been around since the thing came out... and they *still* haven't fixed them... It's been at least two years...

The only reason we have powerful PC's is because of the push to meet gaming needs. Now that PC's have become so cheap it's a close run thing. Consoles are limited by their fixed releases. With the ongoing march of technology of course PC's catch them up and overtake. Consoles need to move forward a generation rather than slowly evolve as PC's do. The dedication of console hardware give them an initial advantage.

PC Gaming is arguably better simply because of hardware (speed, power, and upgradability combined). It does end up costing much more than the console though, which is the main problem. Unless you get a load of discount deals and do illegal stuff (like installing a cracked version of Windows), you won't beat the price of a console when you are trying to match the specs.
Consoles are always sold for a loss, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all sold their consoles for a loss, because they wanted to get the consoles into the market, so that they could try and "win" the market over to their side. They made massive amounts of profit on the games, which is the major selling point of the console after all.
What I'd like to see is an easily upgradable (even properly hackable) console released. If I had the money, I'd do a Mark Shuttleworth-esque approach and make some kind of open source gaming system...a proper hackbox, open to everyone.

I'm talking about a console...something designed for gaming and just gaming, with various controllers and easily upgradable parts. Not a PC in other words.

All you need to do is get standard pc stuff, put it in a box, get some OS running on it (preferably with a lot of GPL backing like Linux) with a strong OpenGL engine and away you go.
