So was Don Quixote's fight with the windmills too..

Quote:Given the natural cynicism and nastiness of Atheists [here] in general... is there any reason to live a "Moral" life?

Given the cuntiness and pomposity of you and several other theists aforum, I'm surprised that you haven't realized that we all are Homo sapiens. How does that Christian compassion work out for you?

Quote:How do you keep it in check?

Easily.

Quote:But, they do have a conviction in the Lord Jesus. and they know that they will answer to their words and deeds.

I (would, if I had reason to) worry more about a real jury than a fictional one.

Quote:As an observation as a Christian... Your words are pretty mean spirited to any religious.

People like you, with rotten attitudes come around often. Do you want us to bend over and present? Yo, Captain Colostomy, what did you do to my rectal irrigation system and Vaseline? Rondee here wants a taste!

Quote:And I've witnessed a lot of hate here. Maybe you feel you have that right? But also people are individuals, and deserve at least to be heard for their ideas, and concepts relating to just about anything.... religious or otherwise.

Maybe you should practice what you preach, you daft sod.

Quote:Honesty in general... where is the line drawn, and how?

"The decent human being", a manual that I got with my mother's milk. (What, everyone does not get a copy?!)

Quote:I hope you take this thread seriously!

Yeah, about the time bears knock on my door to borrow the bathroom. I'll let you know when that happens.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

We understand that in order to enjoy the perks of taking part in civilization we need to abide by the terms and conditions. I don't want you to fuck my partner, so I won't fuck yours. I don't want you to steal my goods, so I won't steal yours. I want you to be honest with me, so I will be honest with you. If I want to enjoy peace, I will participate in keeping peace. There are stretch marks in this and I will accept the scars when I feel that the ultimate result is worth it. For example, I will be rude to you when you are being a dick and this produces a stretch in what I have established as my values, but I feel that your behavior justifies it, so I am willing to accept any marks it leaves behind. Common sense is also required. Different situations will bring different reasoning behind the actions, but generally fall under the same principles.

When a religious person asks, "So, what is stopping you from killing or raping?" I always feel like I could gag, but I don't because it's gross. What stops you? God? You know what stops me? That I don't want to kill or rape. I don't feel the inclination to take somebody's life away. I don't want to traumatize somebody or abuse them. If all that is stopping you from murdering or raping is your religion, then I hope you are not smart enough to realize your god is a product of people's imagination.
Pointing around: "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, you're cool, fuck you, I'm out!"

But if you wanted to fuck and steal and you knew you could get away with it what's stopping you?

Because lack of moral values lead to a society collapsing into barbarism and anarchy.

Then you have a sociopath on your hands, what has that got to do with atheists?

Quote:That's a lot of people and a stupid reason for hating them.

AGAIN, my mother is a Catholic, she buys the virgin birth story, she buys the death story. I don't hate her, but that does not mean I have to love those claims.

Otherwise if we always avoided a challenge to a social norm to placate the insecurities of those who hold it, we'd still be in the dark ages and look like the Taliban ourselves.

The world changed because social norms were challenged. It is why blacks are no longer slaves and women have the right to vote. It is why we no longer believe the sun rotates around the earth.

Context matters and I think you missed that.

No. You were pretty clear. You hate people that believe in life after death. Ergo, you hate your mother. Logic's a bitch.

Hey Chad? People fuck each other's partners and steal from each other all the time. And they rape and murder, too. What's stopping them? Often nothing. People get away with it all the time.

Don't quote half of what I said. Now if you are being sarcastic, you do understand that text is much harder to interpret inflection such as voice.

So for their sake, I will repeat. I love my mother, that does not mean I have to love everything she claims.

I think all humans are capable of doing good and being good, but lack the understanding of the dark side religion and how it scrambles their brains causing far to many times to lead them to commit very horrible atrocities on other humans.
