Win8 should have been better than win7...
I'm still a happy win7 user, as the sticker on my laptop isn't good for win8...
Every iteration of an os changes things, that's why it's a different release. I find that many people equate an os being different with it being worse, likely because everybody has different ideas about what should change and what should remain the same, and they mistake the fact of their personal preferences in the matter not being followed for a fault in the new design. I know it took me forever to get used to the new location of things in XP after being used to where they were in NT, but that wasn't a fault in the OS. There may be legitimate faults in 8, but most of the bitches I hear are nothing but bullshit from people still stuck in the "fanboi" stage.

Really? Tell me how 'Windows 6.2' doesn't refer to the NT kernel, and how 'Windows 8.1' isn't a marketing name for the entire kernel + user space build. Then tell me again how it doesn't mean what I think it means. I have - and while the performance gains may or may not be significant, the new start screen is a terrible interface for systems using a mouse and keyboard as primary input. It's fine for touch devices and for 10 foot UI use cases like media centers. What MS has failed to comprehend in all of this is that what makes an efficient UI varies across devices and use cases.
The problem is for people like me, who support dozens of users. Many of whom are using standard PCs and have learned to work with the Start button and Windows menu system and are going to have serious problems adapting to the new layout. They don't WANT to learn how to use Windows 8, they have work to do for clients who pay us money for something other than trying to figure out a new OS interface. And not all of them want to spend time learning how to use it when they were doing just fine with Windows XP or Windows 7. I cringe when I think of how many times they are going to ask me why the Start button (in 8.1) just dumps them to the tiled interface, which they don't understand and do not want to learn.
We managed to dodge the Vista bullet, but this... I'm just glad that I'll be leaving the job in a little over a year. If I can hold off a migration to Windows 8 during that time, I might make it out alive.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

You didn't say 'marketing name', you said build version, a concept that in general and in the context of Microsoft Windows operating systems releases refers to something entirely different. Oh, and if you insist, 'build version doesn't mean what you think it means'. Wikipedia Wrote:In software versioning, the build number is often used as a versioning identifier subordinate to, and more finely graded than, the version number. For example, various iterations of an application might be called "Acme FooWare 6.0", but in the "Help > About" dialog, the exact iteration will be identified with a longer, unique identifier that includes both the version number and the build number (for example, Acme FooWare 6.0.3.2246).
Apo, I've been a professional software dev for better than 20 years. I know what a build version is. I misspoke in my original post - what I intended to say was product version, and I said build because it's the version of the entire software stack - not just the kernel. I thought the context would have made that clear.
You use the wrong term to describe something, and it's supposed to be clear from context that you actually understand the term you're using incorrectly? And now you're what, blaming me because you misspoke? Clever. Kinda dickish, imo, but whatever floats your boat. (October 19, 2013 at 1:45 am)apophenia Wrote: Where do you get that I'm blaming you? I did think the context would make what I was trying to say clear, and I was mistaken. I already admitted that I used the term incorrectly. I erred in responding as I did, and I regret it.
I don't think my version of windows 8 gets the upgrade...shame.
Other than that I quite like windows 8 on my touch screen laptop although I could see how it would be strange on non-touch screen things. You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid. Tinkety Tonk and down with the Nazis. Anyone tried 8 or 8 RT on a tablet. I like my Android tablet, but it's somewhat underpowered. Wondering whether to just upgrade to a faster tablet, or look into 8 or iOs. |
