my in-laws are devout Catholic.

No - they are NOT

A devout catholic believe in the "Golden rule" - ie - Do unto others as you would have the do unto you"

Obviously - they do not accept that.

Now - as far as proving your point - YOU do not have to.
THE existence of a god - is their claim - so it is theirs to prove - using testable and verifiable proof - which NO ONE has ever done.

Instead - if they talk about the power of prayer - which we know has NO power at all - get them to pray for a statistically significant event.
THEY will complain that they god will only do it if it is the gods will

So - then PICK something that would have to be the will of god - example - the end to sexual molestation of young children. What god could be against that? Let them set the date for sometime next year - and let them pray away. IT won't happen in their lifetime.
