Atheists and marriage
#41
RE: Atheists and marriage
Like many other posters, my missus and I were together for quite some time before we were married. No pressure from family or society or married friends or anything like that. It was sort of, 'What'll we do this week-end?' 'I dunno. We could get married, I suppose...' and we did.

My gran on Da's side - a sweet old duck - was funny. She sent us a post card saying, 'Now that you're married, you can give me great grand children. Get on with it!!'

As far as religion influencing the decision, all that happened was that some of our friends were concerned about us having a mixed marriage - I'm a Catholic atheist and Ellen's a Jewish atheist.

I've been married for 43 years. If I'd committed murder I would have gotten out after 25.

Here in the US I've been told about the tax breaks and what not (perfect reason to spiritually bind yourself to another for eternity), and I've heard from others those benefits aren't that great... and I don't want to be stuck here in America forever anyway.

I never saw the need to get married, but did in the end anyway because my wife wanted to.

I justified it to myself by reasoning that I was legally committing myself to her, and it would keep the extended families happy.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

Sure there's not really a logical need for it, but my girlfriend wants to get married at some point in her life and emotionally I think it's romantic, so I support it. Obviously it's not for everyone.
What falls away is always, and is near.

Also, I am not pretending to be female, this profile picture is my wonderful girlfriend. XD

I'm happily married, and we're both atheists. We didn't have a formal engagement or a wedding, by mutual agreement.

I see no problem with marriage or the process of getting married whether it's in church, a courthouse, outside or on a boat. Maybe in Vegas to an Elvis impersonator is a little tacky, but whatever floats the three martinis you just had.
