I get really annoyed when I see sportsfolk crossing themselves, looking to the sky in the prayer position or flaunting their faith on themselves. Do you?
The question that needs asking about this demonstraton of faith is this:-
Does " God " take sides?
The answer might be " yes " in competitions between 2 opponents where 1 wins and 1 loses. Furthermore, presumably whole teams, or parts of teams, indulge in prayers to be successful in whatever competition they are playing.
How does this work then?
Does " God " judge what are offerd up and choose the best groveller?
Does " God " ignore the prayers ( cause not all prayers are answered don't you know? ) and go with his favourite?
Does " God " not give a toss about sport cause he's far too busy on other divine tasks?
Does God squad consider any of these questions? Probably not, but I'd be interested in their answers if they were to.
Now you may say it's only sport, so what's the problem?
Well on a very basic level the gestures are plain offensive to me, on an intellectual level see above.
Finally, and away from sport, a pertinent analogy is the famous incident of the xmas truce in " the Great War " (surely the biggest misnomer of all time! ) when Tommie played Fritz at football and both sides discovered that " God " was on their side!!!
