I would just like to point out that it didn't say they have no religion, just that they have no organized religion and run their village policy in a secular manner. But yes, it is an example of a village operating better than the surrounding region because it dropped religion as a dependent source of communal advancement.

Just looked them up on wikipedia and ran across this delightful tidbit:

Oh that's just got to infuriate their jealous neighbors (those who aren't thankful for the service they provide that is). "Hey guys, we forgive you for forcing us into the most inhospitable, infertile region in the country. Here, let us offer you our milling services."

excpet for there holy does something unseeming, then it is god conforming to that culture
