In order to understand the Jesus/face of God contradiction, one must first understand the Greek concept where it came from, i.e. the logos, or "word of God." God, the creator, could not be with man directly. He could not communicate with men so he created "the word" or logos to act as an intermediary between himself and man. That was supposed to be Jesus.

There was the great homoousian debate which lasted centuries over this issue which eventually gave us the warped concept of the trinity where God is 3 persons, but ain't.
