I know that some may quibble at my use of the word "novel" to descibe the book, but, I really do think it fits: the OED defines the novel as: "a fictitious prose narrative of book length" It's fictitious, it's prose (even the song lyrics), there's some semblance of narrative, and, like I said, it's almost as long as the first Harry Potter book, so, by the standards of the Oxford English Dictionary, it is, technically, a novel.

When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

They're kind of interesting from a more academic standpoint. You can use them to get a pretty good look at how the religious far right in the United States thinks, but other than that, their uses are relegated to their humor value, and to their potential use as kindling for a fire in the wastelands if there's ever a global thermonuclear exchange. Even when I used to be more inclined toward Christianity, I thought that Jack Chick was batshit insane.

James says it is and get pissed at her and not Thomas Hardy for that.

I think that the Bible is worth reading, or at least parts of it are. You just have to read it with the assumption that it's mythological, because it's frankly really comforting to know that parts of it never happened. Some of the Psalms are beautiful examples of ancient poetry on par with Ovid or Homer, and the teachings of Jesus are generally good to the extent that they've been preserved. They have to be sifted, but that's true when it comes to any moral philosophy from that time period. Other than that, the morality can get pretty abysmal, and the writing in some parts can be boring (obviously Leviticus wasn't ever meant to be entertaining, but ouch).
The Quran might have some good points but, to be honest, it's really hard to read for any length of time. People say that it's beautiful poetry in the Arabic, but in an English translation, it just seems choppy and repetitive.
