So, the answer to your question is, A) I don't know, and, B) You need to ask better questions, with less bias and assumptions; even if I were an atheist, I would find the wording of your question presumptuous and loaded. I suspect you didn't so much want to know what others thought as to disguise a statement of your personal opinion as an inquiry by cloaking it in the form of a question.

My purposes were twofold: To genuinely inquire how it is that the de-converts here came about their current position and to mock those who would lie to themselves and even worse, lie to children.

I don't ever really remember praying and meaning it. Not even when I was really young and going through the motions. I always remember feeling a bit like "am I the only one who thinks this is a bit kooky?" looking out the side of my face from the start.

I told my parents I am an atheist via email when I was a plebe at the Naval Academy. I'm still a little ashamed about that...

I never, as a person old enough to think for himself, believed in God. I don't know how I escaped my childhood with that, looking back on it. But whatever happened, I am happy it did.
