The "Special" Olympics is dumb
#21
RE: The "Special" Olympics is dumb
I went to a large Catholic high school for a year in Florida. The basketball coach was a very nice guy. Christian in a good sense, I'd say. But he had this idea that I'd be on the varsity basketball team. In my wheelchair. With all able-bodied players.

Interesting. However, if the rules of the game were not changed at all, I'd be ramming people and hurting them in my wheelchair. If, however, the rules were changed---maybe that I would be required a free throw every 2 minutes of the game, wel, then, that just changes the rules of the game.

It's much more satisfying to play sports with other disabled athletes (unless it's a wheelchair division of a 5K, for instance, where wheelers and able-bodies can be scored seperately within the same race, as men and women are).

I guess since all I need is a bell ball something that wouldn't change the rules or how I participate. And I don't have to rest or anything. The only sports I can't do are tennis and baseball, YET.

I personally think other disabled people r too easily satisfied with the illusion of separate but equal.

Your "disability" is different Miss Quill. Those who participate in The Special Olympics are psychologically challenge.

I would think that having a bell ball would change "the rules"? Maybe not as I would have no idea what it would be like to be in your position.

Nope the bell is specifically so I can play in mixed company. Me hearing where a ball is doesn't affect sighted players at all.

And I think a lot of intellectually disabled people have been conditioned to accept things the way they are, if no one shows them other options of course they're happy.

But wasn't that BQ's point when she spoke of "segregation?"

Segregation is forceful. They're proud of their own group and culture. Same with deaf culture. They don't want hearing people included. No one is forcing them to have a special Olympics. They choose to go.

I'm a very active member of deaf culture. It's wonderful.

We'll never stop discrimination against the disabled if the deaf continue to pull the whole no boys allowed

If the people in the special Olympics want a special Olympics and enjoy it, I don't see the problem.

I wouldn't want to take that away from them to satisfy some sort of selfish desire to feel like I'm treating them equally.
