If all Christians, Muslims, and Jews suddenly turned into clear thinking humanists instead wasting all that time and money on their favorite brand of bullshit?

It would obviously have positive effects in the long term but immediately it wouldn't change too much. It's not like once you become an atheist you become a rocket scientist. We'd just have a lot of idiots who believe in gods turn into idiots who don't believe in god. They're still gullible individuals. Atheism isn't a barometer of intelligence. If they became more intelligent over night and then came to the reasonable conclusion that there's insufficient evidence for god, that would be great.

Yah, ordinarily I would agree with you, TAW, but LemonV specified 'clear thinking humanists' so I'm more optimistic about this particular scenario as opposed to the usual 'what if everyone was an atheist?' proposition.

It would depend on how the dolts spent their suddenly free time. If all the time they wasted praying, going to church, and reading that fucking bible were put to good use things might improve.
Sadly, I suspect most rednecks would just drink more beer and screw their sisters harder.

Regardless of any actual contribution they might then make the simple fact that we would no longer have to worry about religious conflict, suicide bombings, sectarian violence, anti-women, anti-gay rhetoric from pulpits and equivalents, the end of the Taliban, the end of the Southern Baptists, the end of the ultra religious Jews, the disassembling of the papal regime and, ideally, distribution of that wealth amongst the needy, the acceptance of condoms as protection against sexually transmitted disease, the freedom to turn Jerusalem into an international city,.......
I can see some upside I think.

I feel like most people would probably just find something else to hate and kill people for. Like maybe everyone would just go back to hating other races rather than other religions.
