When Someone Sneezes...
January 28, 2014 at 2:41 pm
Do you say "bless you" when someone sneezes?
I know it's kind of a pointless question, but I've had a couple people get mad at me if I don't say it. So I was just wondering what everyone's stance is on it.

I actually do not state anything. I just pretend I did not hear the sneeze.

I just sit there awkwardly and avoid saying anything. If I just need to, it's "gezundheit".

I had to wean myself off of "bless you" with "gesundheit". Now I'm weaning myself off of "gesundheit" because it's kind of ridiculous to say anything at all.

Depends on the person...
Someone who knows me usually gets nothing... which is as much as they get when they cough, or barf, or vomit, or any other noise that comes from their bodies and is not speech.
Someone who's only an acquaintance usually gets a "santinho" (which means little saint, sort of equivalent to a "bless you"), or, most commonly, "saúde" which means "health"... and can be said in french "santé" so that it sounds a bit like the first option. Santinho is the most common...err... reply to a sneeze employed in Portugal.

I don't acknowledge people sneezing. It's a sneeze, they're not dying. I used to say "bless you" as an automatic response because it was just the normal thing to do but I've stopped saying it recently because it seems completely unnecessary. If it's an acquaintance or someone who I feel would need to have their sneeze acknowledged, I might say, "bueno salud" or just "good health".

Far too many times I find myself saying "cover your mouth!"
