Christians - Should it be legal to own slaves since God approves?

RE: Christians - Should it be legal to own slaves since God approves?
That's why I want to look at whether morality is objective or subjective. If objective, as you seem to believe, then we can answer that question when we've defined the basis for our objective morality. A basis which to satisfy the demands of objectivity must be applicable in all circumstances and irrespective of society.

If morality is subjective, as tbt believes, then the answer can only be "it depends" because then morality is contingent on the opinions and perspective of whoever is judging and the context in which it is being assessed.

Sorry, I replied to your post before you edited it. I was answering your initial question "was slavery immoral".

I can give you my subjective view if you like, but I make no claim to be the arbiter of morality.

I tend to the subjective position. If there is such a thing as objective morality, I only have access to my subjective perception of it.

That does not mean I hold my subjective moral views any less firmly Btw.

I just got done telling you that I don't believe morality is subjective. Not in the way you mean.

Once again, morality concerns the well being of others. If something harms the well being of others, it is immoral.

I don't believe morality is contingent on the opinions and perspective of whoever is doing the assessment.

If someone assesses that rape is moral, they are simply wrong.

You know how you can tell rape is immoral? Ask the victim.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Seems kinda un-Christian-like to hold to a subjective moral paradigm. Hey! I betcha your peers would burn you at the stake before me. Tongue

Ah, OK.

So if I decide to charge more for my services and that harms the well being of my clients (who are then worse off) is that immoral?

If I believe criminals should be locked up and we ask the criminal in prison if my view is moral does that make my view immoral?

Is, then, the objective measure of morality an act which disadvantages one to benefit another?

Rather than examples can you tell be the objective definition of what immoral is?

And to conclude otherwise, ask the perpetrator. Have you ever considered, evil for evil's sake?

Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

- So with the exception of taking the chosen ones as slaves it is permitted in the eyes of your God. No?

This post has gotten side tracked so I'll try to put it back were the OP intended.
You all are so concerned over a Bible verse that pertained to a people being punished by God by allowing them to go into slavery.
Why are you not concerned about the slavery in today's world, why are you not doing anything to help and prevent the slave trade going on under your nose. There are more slaves today than at any other time in history, why do you ignore these people, is it because it's out of your sight so out of mind. Christian groups are raising money to bring awareness to this terrible crime, and you would have this money taxed so less would be available to do this good work, they are working throughout the world to help end this atrocity. Christian networks are growing every year to abolish the modern day slave trade, it's in your backyard so what have you done.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
