Where do u get ur moral values? If u say the bible, then if we take away ur bible then u would be a monster??
Unfortunately some people will say yes, and I think it says more about those people than it does us.

Unless eve is walking around somewhere, this is a big fat whopper (within the internal narrative at least.)
I can't give you that one. They are warned they will surely die the day they eat of it. In context, all the serpent is saying is that the fruit isn't poisonous and won't kill you. What killed her was failure to eat from the Tree of Life, and that fruit was never on the menu. There's never any indication at all that Adam and Eve would be immortal if they didn't eat from the Tree of Knowledge.
It was funny how Yahweh was in such a hurry to evict them before they could get a bite off the Life fruit, like there would be no stopping Adam and Eve if they had some of that!
It's a just-so story: Why do we die? Why don't snakes have legs? Why is childbirth painful?
I can't see why people would take it so much more seriously than 'How the leopard got its spots'.

Quote:I can't give you that one. They are warned they will surely die the day they eat of it.
That depends on the translation you read. In the KJV its
Quote:7 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
However the NIV has
Quote: but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
Both were translated from the same texts so it depends who you think did the better job of translating into contemporary English. I go with the one translated by people who SPOKE contemporary english, rather than ye olde englishe.
Quote:In context, all the serpent is saying is that the fruit isn't poisonous and won't kill you.
In context? Sure you're not a christian ? Cos thats our trick, to use the context to indicate a meaning beyond the bald text. The idea of the fruit being poisoned is just something you read into the text, its neither stated nor inferred.
Quote:What killed her was failure to eat from the Tree of Life, and that fruit was never on the menu.
Sure it was.
Quote:in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.....
You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,
Many trees, including the good and evil tree and the life tree. They were aloud to eat from any except the good and evil tree and that includes the life tree.
Quote:There's never any indication at all that Adam and Eve would be immortal if they didn't eat from the Tree of Knowledge.
There kind of is.
Quote:the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
Quote:It was funny how Yahweh was in such a hurry to evict them before they could get a bite off the Life fruit, like there would be no stopping Adam and Eve if they had some of that!
That's the story. That God was OK with them eating any fruit (including the fruit from the tree of life) UNTIL they scarfed the knowledge fruit.
Quote:It's a just-so story: Why do we die? Why don't snakes have legs? Why is childbirth painful?
I can't see why people would take it so much more seriously than 'How the leopard got its spots'.
Here I tend to agree. And there are logical and moral holes in it through which one could drive a bus. But nonetheless, I think that in the story (which is what I think it is, a story) the devil does lie. In the NIV version at least.
"Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken."

It's debatable if "Satan" is shown lying... but there is no doubt that "god" is a fucking liar.
Quote:12 “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you.[b ] Your throne shall be established forever.”’”
17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
This, of course, was bullshit. The Davidic dynasty even in the story book that is the bible did not last 4 centuries...let alone forever. Thus, god's promises are like those of any ersatz politician. Worthless. And, since believers claim he "knows all" that means he knew he was lying which makes him an even bigger scumbag than some politician who simply reacts to whichever way the wind blows.

Can't argue with that...

Jacob(smooth) makes some good points and I would like to add something else. This occurred to me after reading the verses he gave. In the context given the word day does not by necessity mean the same day. So I looked up the word in Hebrew and it can mean the daylight hours of the day which doesn't seem to fit, it also and more often means an unspecified amount of time, such as in the day of Noah. Noah's life spanned many years and to assign a certain day would not fit.
This is the verse from the NASV, Genesis 2:17 but from the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die."
Now to use the meaning as daylight hours would not fit very well, but with the way the story goes the word day (yowm) as an unspecified amount of time fits well.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
