Quote:Naloxone, also known by its trade name Narcan, works within minutes to reverse the effects of an overdose by adhering to brain cell receptors and blocking out opiates. That almost instantly reverses the high and sends an addict into an abrupt and often painful withdrawal.
Quote:LePage wrote the legislation would “make it easier for those with substance abuse problems to push themselves to the edge, or beyond” and provide “a false sense of security that abusers are somehow safe from overdose if they have a prescription nearby.”
What the fuck?
It puts them into a painful withdrawal and he thinks it'll be abused?!?
I guess he also thinks that access to abortion and contraceptive means more women wi have sex with undesirables. /s
What a fucking fucked piece of shit!

Naloxone and other opiate antagonists is what I would call a modern torture device. It didn't work on me.

If I was a CIA interrogator, I'd give a shot of heroin to the suspect, then an antagonist, then rinse & repeat. I figure that it wouldn't take more than 4 iterations to break someone. I should stop giving them ideas now

Growing up in several of the nastiest fucking slums in the country, I saw what heroin and coke did to people, but it hadn't spread so much out from where I lived in those days. I had thought that heroin had died off, replaced by meth, but instead it looks like it's just merely become even more available while having less awareness about it being circulated. Except now it's moving further into suburbs instead of the hood,
which makes sense. With so many peoples' lives starting to fall apart, it makes sense that such a numbing drug would start gaining in popularity amongst that demographic.
People in the burbs aren't just going to heroin though. The reason there is more heroin use there is a side effect of prescription pills. I know a few guys that started with perc 30s, but two of those will run you $50-60. It ends up being cheaper to switch to heroin, hence it becoming more popular again.

Opiates are the best. I love them so so much.
But when people become addicted, they are treated so unfairly by society. Alcohol is more dangerous, but what are we doing about the fact that Emergency Depeartments of every hospital in the West are full of drunks on a Friday and Saturday night? Why is it opitate addicts getting all the stick when it's alcoholics and binge drinkers that are costing the most money???

The reasons for drug use are many.
Simply enjoying the sensation.
Trying to forget something.
Trying to heighten something.
Rebellion.
Acceptance.
Curiosity.
Stupidity.
Many others, too. It can, and often will, be a mix of reasons. The usage of the drugs themselves aren't what's bad about them, it's the addiction, and the lethality of so many of these kinds of drugs. Heroin, you can OD on it your first time, using a low dose. On top of that, there is no 'between' between using it your first time, and being mind-lock-addicted to it. Opiates in general do that kinda shit. Sadly, people are going to get what they want, or need, or think they want, or think they need, and "men" like this person who is unworthy of his station in life are not helping, they're making it worse, and they're making it worse because their heads are too far up their own asses. A bunch of old rich white baby boomer "men" who were born with silver spoons in their hands, BOTH hands, who've never been out to the projects or the ghettos or the slums, much less lived in them, much less experienced what happens in them, being elected to stations of power to take care of a society that they were born apart from, and live apart from, by people who don't know any better, or more realistically, by people who are just like them. Oh, they don't have to be rich to vote for those kinds of people; they just have to be ignorant, naive, and divorced from the reality of the world in which others live.
Too many in this country are too busy worrying about me, me, me, me me me me me me. "I'm the one who is TRULY important. I don't have time to think about people suffering, dying, starving, thirsting, withering away, oftentimes within mere miles of where I live; the superbowl is on!"
Selfishness is fine, but when your entire life revolves around you and your own, and your thoughts towards others suffering is "not my problem," it's not fine. Especially because there are many, many people in this world who have said the exact same thing, until it became their problem. Then, suddenly, they want everyone to help them. I wouldn't balk at the prospect of helping someone in that situation, because then they would understand, but then there are people who take that assistance and go right back to completely disregarding everyone else except themselves, even when they're in a situation where they can actually do something to help.
We call them Red State Republicans, or RSRs as I prefer.
Awwh yeah, got my political soapbox on!

Still, if you don't be small 's' selfish and care for yourself you won't be able to help anyone.

I know of nurses who get mad when heroin addicts come into the ER, all in pain, and take time away from "real patients". What the fuck is a "real patient"? Pretty damn sure addiction is a health problem and thus addicts are "real patients" requiring real treatment.
There was also going to be a needle exchange close to my town, but that shit got shot down because "OH MY GOD THE HEROIN ADDICTS WILL SHOOT UP BEHIND THE BUILDING" or something.
Really, we need to be more concerned with helping these people than giving into irrational fear. I hope the heroin OD reversing drug becomes widely available - fuck those bootstrappy dickheads. "Those poor oppressed people! It isn't like they did this to themselves or anything!" Are you serious? Irrational to not want to needle exchange dedicated to helping these people extend their addictions? I am 16 & I haven't smoked a single cig. People do this to themselves, and if it gets them killed then good riddance! The last thing we need is needle exchanges that encourage this sort of behavior. The best thing to do is just let them kill themselves. Rid ourselves of this filth!
