Many others, too. It can, and often will, be a mix of reasons. The usage of the drugs themselves aren't what's bad about them, it's the addiction, and the lethality of so many of these kinds of drugs. Heroin, you can OD on it your first time, using a low dose. On top of that, there is no 'between' between using it your first time, and being mind-lock-addicted to it. Opiates in general do that kinda shit. Sadly, people are going to get what they want, or need, or think they want, or think they need, and "men" like this person who is unworthy of his station in life are not helping, they're making it worse, and they're making it worse because their heads are too far up their own asses. A bunch of old rich white baby boomer "men" who were born with silver spoons in their hands, BOTH hands, who've never been out to the projects or the ghettos or the slums, much less lived in them, much less experienced what happens in them, being elected to stations of power to take care of a society that they were born apart from, and live apart from, by people who don't know any better, or more realistically, by people who are just like them. Oh, they don't have to be rich to vote for those kinds of people; they just have to be ignorant, naive, and divorced from the reality of the world in which others live.

Too many in this country are too busy worrying about me, me, me, me me me me me me. "I'm the one who is TRULY important. I don't have time to think about people suffering, dying, starving, thirsting, withering away, oftentimes within mere miles of where I live; the superbowl is on!"

Selfishness is fine, but when your entire life revolves around you and your own, and your thoughts towards others suffering is "not my problem," it's not fine. Especially because there are many, many people in this world who have said the exact same thing, until it became their problem. Then, suddenly, they want everyone to help them. I wouldn't balk at the prospect of helping someone in that situation, because then they would understand, but then there are people who take that assistance and go right back to completely disregarding everyone else except themselves, even when they're in a situation where they can actually do something to help.

We call them Red State Republicans, or RSRs as I prefer.

Irrational to not want to needle exchange dedicated to helping these people extend their addictions? I am 16 & I haven't smoked a single cig. People do this to themselves, and if it gets them killed then good riddance! The last thing we need is needle exchanges that encourage this sort of behavior. The best thing to do is just let them kill themselves. Rid ourselves of this filth!

Fuck me. I wish I was 16 and knew everything again Dodgy.

Nice way to dodge addressing the argument. Why should the good taxpayer have to pay for a bunch of degenerate addicts?

Because the line between "good" and "degenerate" is not drawn between tax payers and drug addicts, it runs down the middle of all of us.

Also I don't see what you are getting at here because I am a socialist.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of this before, and that I am having to spell it out. It originally refered to Nazi Germany, and the apathy of people when a problem affects a group of people of which they are not a member.

"When Pastor Niemöller was put in a concentration camp we wrote the year 1937; when the concentration camp was opened we wrote the year 1933, and the people who were put in the camps then were Communists. Who cared about them? We knew it, it was printed in the newspapers.
Who raised their voice, maybe the Confessing Church? We thought: Communists, those opponents of religion, those enemies of Christians - "should I be my brother's keeper?"
Then they got rid of the sick, the so-called incurables. - I remember a conversation I had with a person who claimed to be a Christian. He said: Perhaps it's right, these incurably sick people just cost the state money, they are just a burden to themselves and to others. Isn't it best for all concerned if they are taken out of the middle [of society]? -- Only then did the church as such take note. Then we started talking, until our voices were again silenced in public. Can we say, we aren't guilty/responsible? The persecution of the Jews, the way we treated the occupied countries, or the things in Greece, in Poland, in Czechoslovakia or in Holland, that were written in the newspapers
I believe, we Confessing-Church-Christians have every reason to say: mea culpa, mea culpa! We can talk ourselves out of it with the excuse that it would have cost me my head if I had spoken out."

When I was in university, as I have already shared in these forums just very recently, I was in particular danger of becoming addicted to cocaine after weed failed to sufficiently allow me enough escape from reality.

With cocaine, I felt that my mind was sharper, clearer, more creative and somehow afforded greater scope of thought and philosophy. I wrote to a greater level - or at least I considered that I did.

In the end, I decided it was too much.

H terrifies me as a drug and always has.

Yeah. As my people say, "there, but for the grace of God, go I."

I imagine there is something analogous in Atheism.

Perhaps it's simply that when you've had the opportunity to fuck up a few times, about matters more significant than homework, you develop a little more compassion for those who have.

People do not simply wake up one morning and think "I'll become an addict today", or "I think I'll start eating myself to death today", or "I think I'll begin getting lung cancer".

They are human beings, with human weaknesses, who make human mistakes. The measure of a man is not how he treats his equal, but how he treats the less fortunate. I forget who said that, but it rings true.

We are beings of compassion and empathy - some of us, in any case.

I prefer Nietzschean individualism to petty compassion. What has altruism ever done but forced us to carry the weak?
