Yeah... the first few bits of coal can be really hard to find... being torchless that first night can be... well: deadly.
Not quite as terrifying as spawning on a tiny island with one small tree, and only one wheat seed from the grass, no other bodies of land in sight.... but it's up there.

Lolz. Fun with flint and steel!
To hell with your creepers and your zambers!

I'd hug you... but I somehow think that'd just make you uncomfortable. I've noticed that not many people appreciate being touched by a ghost.

If I start on one of those islands with one tree and little to no grass, and no mainland in sight, I just roll up another seed. Maybe make a boat and circle around the island a bit, but that's just not a good start.
I'm glad they added charcoal, where you can cook raw wood, but I'm not sure why they decided to make it a different item. I realize it's not exactly the same, but it's not like Minecraft is trying to be as close to real life as possible. Still, I like that coal isn't one of those thing you need to hunt down anymore.
Speaking of creepers, if you can get a good supply of gunpowder and make TNT, I've found it's a great tool for making a tunnel. A nice 3x3 mountain pass or something, you can even ride a boat or horse through with ease. It's just that getting a lot of gunpowder isn't something I've been able to do easily.

I actually rather appreciated the challenge of it. It was on FTB, so I had that map over in the top corner. I had to be very careful with my tree management, had to dig the dirt layers down to expand my tree-growing operation.
So many apples, once I got it going. Dug down below the seafloor, and then I drove a path hard to the north. Some ~1K blocks out was a desert mainland. Few minor islands before then. Out of curiosity, I then turned on godmode and flew until I was heading south of my origin. Beautiful forest but 250-400 blocks away. I kicked myself in real life.

Yeah, charcoal is much more sustainable. I tend to use it until I can get nuclear or wind/solar running everywhere... and even still: automating the process of treegrowing/shredding/cooking as much as I can still works out adequately for the start to quarries.

Certainly
But... I prefer the mining laser, once I can get a reasonable charging center
It's not too hard, really... just gotta find a creeper-spawner (a little tricky initially), and set her up such that it drops the creepers down slowly at the push of a button (into a containment cell), from which you have them butchered en-masse. Turn them off, take lootz.

I don't often think of apples as a food source for some reason. I usually go for meat until I get a bread farm going. Or mushrooms if I run into a roofed forest. That's my favorite new biome.

I haven't played minecraft in... probably 8-10 months, maybe more. Recently had to uninstall it for space to my the hell out of my skyrim (so... fucking... good). I do remember the mushroom biomes. Can't remember what they're called, but they were always a bit cool.
I don't typically think of apples as a primary food source either XD Like, golden apples are sweet and all, but in desperate situations, you do what you have to do.
Eventually I got a wheat farm up and running... but 1 seed is a really slow place to start from.

I've set up a Survival mode server on port 2222. Again, there are access restrictions, so if you want to play on it, let me know your Minecraft username.

I haven't actually gotten in because I'm not sure where to put in what server I want to be in. Maybe I just have a different setup, or there's something I missed because I haven't tried multiplayer before. Somtimes I just need the retard's guide to doing simple things.
I wish the golden apples regened more, though at least if you can get to Nether, you can farm infinite gold from the Pigmen.

I'm happy to report that Marsellus Wallace is enjoying playing Minecraft, and once he stops falling in lava he'll be a great person to go diamond hunting with!
There are still 4 copies of Minecraft up for grabs if you can't afford your own.

Buckets of water, Mar. You want to get three iron, cook them in your furnace, set them on the grid in a V formation, and treat your water bucket as an essential tool for mining. Also you can swim up water, and go down safely, so use it as a way to get up and down. Also don't dig straight down. That's dangerous.
