If you get two buckets and fill each with water, you can make an infinite water source by emptying them in two opposite corners of a 2x2 hole. Then you can simply refill the buckets again from the newly created water source.

Too bad you can't make an infinite lava source. Lava is great for large cooking projects, because it cooks 96 items, or one and a half stacks of 64. So if you wanted to cook clay or stone to make bricks, or something like that, then use lava. Of course if you get to the Nether, there's a huge lava lake to draw from, but the Nether is advanced game material.
