You! Get into the closet! Quick!

I was hoping to find some support of your statement but my hope was low because independent contractors are not employees according to the law and are therefore outside many of the laws that govern the employer-employee relationship. I think it is good in general because it allows for quick litigation regarding independant contractors and greases the wheels of commerce by eliminating much of the overhead related to employment. Independant contractors simply have to be careful to protect their interests during a deal.

Thanks for looking. I'm sad to find that it is not the case, it should be.

Also, and to be clear, on my position, I don't think people should ASK about religion as a determination for hiring a contractor or any employee. However, if a store or business puts forth that it is a Christian establishment and trues to "sell" itself on it's Christianity, or whatever, I will avoid it because I'm not asking, they're telling and in some aspects proselytizing. Therefore I am making a decision as a consumer to take my business elsewhere. Hence, I refuse to donate to the Salvation Army because they are notoriously discriminatory based on their religious foundation.

Could you please elaborate on this? (Not the refusing to donate part but the "notoriously discriminatory" part Smile)

The Salvation Army is not a charity organization, it's a church. For years I thought it was just a charity, like the Good Will Store that helped the homeless. So I had no problem donating spare change. It turns out it files as a Church and discriminates based on that, so I no longer give. If it was a religious organization I still might be okay with giving them some spare coins, but the discrimination itself is what stops me. They refuse to hire any gay or lesbians for their charity work, they also have some other practices, like not giving to immigrants and you must attend their church service or no food for you. (I was always under the impression that charity was give for the sake of giving without asking for something in return, and forcing them to a church service is asking for something in return)

They recently teamed up with Sephora, and people who wanted to express their disappointment at having Sephora team up with a discriminatory organization, well their comments were deleted by Sephora on facebook. Sad

Yeah, and all this info about their religion and beliefs are posted right on their website:

http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_...rset=utf-8

It's not hidden, but with the name being "Salvation Army" and the people standing with their bells not having any religious paraphernalia, no proselytizing, they appear to be just a charity organization. The discrimination mostly happens to the people they hire and give to, so the people who give to the SA tend to not be aware.

And honestly, if they were a church just trying to do charity work this way, I would be happy to give. But like I said, there is a trend of extreme discrimination that makes me want to have nothing more to do with them.

charity is giving without any thought of return just the warmth of giving. It seems like they're being very discriminatory and I won't be giving this year myself.

Thanks for that, E.

I've always known the Salvation Army was religious(as nearly all charities are), but I didn't know they functioned like that. This will change how I view them.

I was in the Salvation Army and it's unbelievable to me that people don't realise it's a church. Certainly other denominations think the same though. They are credited with helping start government funded social care, plus lots of very positive stuff. I know a few gay officers. I guess as always the putrid influence of the cesspit of human morality that is America had to produce such bile. Par for the course IMO.

TBH the SA is a dead church strangled with traditionalism. The military gimmick was acceptable 100 years ago along with the soup for souls idea. The intention was good and maybe served a purpose. Now it's entrenched middle class and lost.
